Hows 2010 Looking So Far?
How’s 2010 Looking So Far???

How’s 2010 Looking So Far???
Well, first of all…I apologize for not writing over the last couple of weeks. As a fitness club manager, these last two weeks are unbelievably crazy!!!! I have been involved in the fitness industry for the past 25 years…and every January..it’s the same scene. The gyms are packed! People are motivated! There is incredible energy in the air. For the “12-months- a- year” dedicated regulars..they celebrate mid February-March when the “newbies” have fallen off the wagon, and the “veterans” no longer have to wait for machines & equipment. I, on the other hand, as a trainer & coach, am saddened by people who can’t/won’t make the lifelong commitment to an exercise program.
Many times, people begin an exercise program in an effort to lose weight. Lately, however, I have seen a lot more people implement an exercise program for health reasons. YAY YOU!!...This is where the true value of exercise and the real importance of commitment shines!
So, you are past the days of playing competitive football. You no longer desire to fit in your high school cheerleading outfit. Maybe you even are happy with the way your body looks right now…So, is it still important to exercise?..And, I do mean purposefully exercise by committing to a weight training & cardiovascular exercise program??…ABSOLUTELY!!
Recently “The Wall Street Journal” published an article entitled “The Hidden Benefits of Exercise”. What a wonderful article. I have, for a very long time, viewed exercise as a “cure-all” (for me personally anyway!). I have experienced many of the psychological benefits that go along with exercise, and I’m hoping as I age into an “older adult”, I will benefit more and more from my daily exercise regime. Being able to have my beliefs confirmed in this article was great!
Exercise has been touted as boosting your immune system, stress relieving & great for boosting your metabolism…did you know that exercise has even been shown to reduce the risk of some sorts of cancers…including colon cancer by over 60%. In addition to this article, which you can find at the Wall Street Journal on line, exercise has also been shown to be beneficial with the following:
· Stoke- Aerobic (cardiovascular exercise) in particular, has been shown to lower the risk of stroke
· Heart Disease (no surprise here!) Some studies suggest cardiovascular exercise can lower the risk of heart disease by 20-35%!!
· Good for those bones!! Weight bearing exercises 3-5 days a week have been shown to increase the density in bones…especially important for us ladies!
· Diabetes. Research has shown that people who are “moderately” active have 30-40% lower risk of Type 2 diabetes.
· Depression- Again…no surprise..We all know how great we feel after a workout. Active people have been shown to be 15-25% less likely to suffer from depression.
· Blood Pressure. High blood pressure is in epidemic proportions….Research has shown that by implementing cardiovascular exercise for 40 minutes, 3-5 days a week will lower your blood pressure substantially.
· Arthritis. It seems like a catch 22…you don’t feel like exercising because of the pain…yet exercising will reduce the pain, inflammation & disability.
· Prevents falls. We all know of someone who, as they aged, has become more weak & frail. Due to inactivity, their bones, muscles & connecting tissues become weak, which also affects their abilities to balance. In several studies, research has shown that 30minutes of moderate exercise, 3 times a week can lower the risk of falls by adding strength & coordination.
So…that being said. Whether you have made a commitment this year (and for the rest of your life!!), to commit to exercise…and your sticking with it. Or, you have made the committment this year…and already went astray….Or, you are perfectly content with the “look” of your body…NOW is the time to commit to an exercise program for life. Through commitment to a solid exercise program & and a smart eating program of “clean foods”…you will increase the potential to live a much more rewarding and fulfilling life..day in, day out, for the rest of your life. So, if you haven’t committed to it yet…TODAY IS THE DAY!! Commit to a daily exercise program…Improve your life!!! You deserve it!!
Believe…and you WILL achieve!

The Scary Truth About Sugar
When
you really take a good look at the situation…it is truly scary. Oh, I know there are those of you who
read that first line & roll your eyes…”Here she goes again…” But stay with me here for a bit, and
all I ask is that you give serious consideration to the facts.

When
you really take a good look at the situation…it is truly scary. Oh, I know there are those of you who
read that first line & roll your eyes…”Here she goes again…” But stay with me here for a bit, and
all I ask is that you give serious consideration to the facts.
Some
experts believe that it is as difficult to kick the sugar habit as it is to
stop smoking cigarettes or doing heroin….sound extreme?!…Think about it for a
moment. Do you ever find yourself
craving something sweet soooo bad that you kinda “lose it”!?..You get right
down cranky & irritable until you get that sugar fix….hmmmm???…Sounds an
awful lot like what happens when addicts attempt to give up cigarettes,
alcohol…etc. The thing that makes sugar even more dangerous, is it is SO widely
excepted…and almost PUSHED!!…AAUGH! We are headed into a season filled with high-sugar treats. “So what?”…you may say…I mean sugar
doesn’t cause all the health problems that other addictions cause right?..(you
know what the answer is…) Here is
just a partial list of physical conditions caused or worsened by sugar in the
diet. Keep in mind, these
conditions aren’t caused by an enormous amount ingested…but, simply by taking
in “normal” amounts:
- Obesity
- Heart Disease ie.
Raised blood triglycerides & sticky blood platelets
Hypoglycemia
- Diabetes
- Hyperactivity
- Kidney enlargement
- Increase in uric
acid in blood
- Cancer- in fact research
shows that cancers FEED on sugar!!!!
- Hindered break down
of dietary protein
- Cavities – because
sugar consumption leaches calcium from the teeth
- Weakened immune
system
- Intensified PMS
symptoms – Ladies!!…pay close attention to this! During your menstrual cycles, many times you will crave
sweets—by consuming sugar, you increase the cravings & mood swings
- Yeast infections
Sugar is incredibly
addictive. I have seen grown women
“cry”…seriously-cry, in my office because they just can’t seem to fight that
sugar addiction! The problem is,
the more you eat-the more you want. It used to be that only the rich could afford the luxury of sugar, but
by 1840 “sugar pushers” were handing out free samples. Now the sugar industry has the largest
advertising budget in the world! Sugar, like alcohol is intoxicating. It creates an imbalance of the neurotransmitters of the
brain. The following are mental
and emotional disorders linked to sugar in the diet:
- Irritability
- Manic-depressive
tendancies
- Chronic or frequent
bouts of depression
- Difficulty
concentrating
- Forgetfulness or
absentmindedness
- Lack of Motivation
- Loss of enthusiasm
for plans/projects
- Inconsistency in
thoughts and actions
- Situational
personality changes
- Irrational thoughts
- Emotional outbursts
- Eating disorders
Sound familiar???
Sugar
is so addictive that people will knowingly put their health at risk because
they feel they are “depriving” themselves by saying “no” to sugar…That is
CRAZY!! I know individuals with
diabetes, who have been told they can control this horrible disease through
diet, yet choose to put their health at risk, because they can’t deny
themselves sugar—sound like an addiction?
Bottom
line, the best health choice is to give it up. WARNING- It won’t be easy!…But, it will be worth it. You will be AMAZED how much better you feel when your blood glucose isn’t on a
daily roller-coaster. Trust
me! Here are some ways to start:
- Read the labels. Only a small percentage of sugar
is consumed as packaged
sugar. Many products contain
fructose, or (the worst!) high fructose corn syrup. The FDA even mandates that
“catsup” can’t be called catsup unless it contains sugar. Buy “natural” products such as
salsa instead of catsup & natural peanut butter
- Eat Fruit. Fruit is a great
way to eat something sweet.
Get rid of all the sugar containing snacks and load your
refrigerator with a wide variety of fruits…When you’re craving a sweet
snack, grab some nutritious fruit…It WILL grow on you!
- Avoid artificial
sweetners. These are simply a
crutch. Research has shown
that they still encourage you to crave sweets & they still have a
detrimental effect on your blood glucose levels. Plus they all have dangerous side effects.
- Use Stevia. Stevia is an herb that is very
sweet. There are no side
effects & will not play havic with your blood sugar.
- Stay clear of the
“white stuff”! White flour, white
rice & white potatoes…they have the same effect on blood sugar as sugar.
A couple of books I would highly recommend would be Sugar Blues-
This book changed my life! Seriously! This book was
one of the first published on the subject of sugar addiction. It makes some really good points about
addiction…many times beginning as babies with the sugar in formulas…in some
cases leading to alcoholism (which is high in sugar content) and also cigarette
smoking (which also contain sugar)!…Great book.
Another book, which is highly entertaining, with a
full chapter dedicated to “The Devil –Sugar”!! is Skinny Bitch by Rory
Freedman & Kim Barnouin.
Now, with the holidays ahead of us, is a great
time to be pro-active towards changing your sugar addiction. Plan ahead! If you are headed to a holiday function where you know the
choices will be cookies, cakes & the like, stash some sweet fruit in your
bag. Sure, it will be tempting
& difficult at first…but you CAN do it! Just like any addiction, it will take time to break the
habit. Don’t be surprised if you
feel shaky and encounter headaches…you are dealing with a true addiction
here! Be strong-Be good to
yourself. A couple years down the
road you will look back and be thankful that you made a positive change!
Believe…and you WILL achieve!!

Well, if you read the August 17th issue of "time" magazine...you might begin to think so. Well, before you cancel your gym memberships and trash your running shoes...I would like for you to consider a few things.
Bottom line, daily exercise is going to help you avoid many age related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes or chronic depression. Daily exercise is EXTREMELY important to your OVERALL best health. Whether your goal is to lose a few pounds, help balance menopausal emotions or simply be able to get the enjoyment out of a fulfilling life like you deserve to... EXERCISE IS VITAL!!
That being said...exercise, however IS NOT THE MAGIC DIET PILL! Exercise ALONE will not guarantee you that lean body and ideal weight you may be striving for. The "Time" article suggests that one reason exercise can make you fat is that it induces more hunger...ok, sometimes! But, it's not the exercise that makes you fat...it is us making poor choices & eating the wrong foods.
How many of you have watched the same people, day after day, at the gym..working out like animals...sweating...working at a very high intensity...yet, week after week, month after month, their body compositions never change. For some, genetics may come into play. For most however, it is due to eating too much of the wrong foods...period!! For some, they simply may not have a good understanding of how to best nourish their bodies..there IS a lot of misleading & conflicting information out there. For others, which again the "Time" article makes reference to, they use high sugar, high fat foods as a reward for working out ...aaaugh! I have heard so many fellow exercisers joke about that being the main reason they exercise in the first place.... so they can eat poorly...and "get by with it". Well, even if they "get by with it" on the scale...eating a high fat, high sugar diet will have long term effects on your health. Plus, it is amazing how long you have to work out to burn the 200+ calories in a candy bar or the 400 calories in that bag of fries!
If we truly want the best for our bodies & our health..for the long haul...we have to take a "lifestyle approach" to exercising & eating. We have to look at it as our "job". How can anything else be more important than our own health...And in many ways YOU have the majority of the control over it. (The latest research indicates that 85% of age related disease can prevented through lifestyle changes!) If you want to be at your optimum weight...lean, fit & feeling terrific for a lifetime...you must make a lifestyle change. If your workout makes you hungry...great!...eat! But eat smart. Consume good quality protein immediately after your workout...a protein shake, some egg whites or tuna are all good choices. This will enable those well-worked muscles to recover and develop effectively from your training. Don't pollute that well-trained body with high fat, high sugar foods that are going to kibosh most of the benefits from your exercise. Don't compensate & use the fact that you exercised today to eat junk. Show some respect for yourself...be proud of your accomplishments. Instead, use your accomplishments as a springboard to make better choices regarding food that does your body good.
If you belong to a health club, make sure they have a nutrition consultant to help get the most from your exercise program. Exercise DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT!! YOU are in control of what goes in your mouth! YOU are in control of being the BEST YU CAN BE!!
BELIEVE...AND YOU WILL ACHIEVE!!
