How’s 2010 Looking So Far???
Well, first of all…I apologize for not writing over the last couple of weeks. As a fitness club manager, these last two weeks are unbelievably crazy!!!! I have been involved in the fitness industry for the past 25 years…and every January..it’s the same scene. The gyms are packed! People are motivated! There is incredible energy in the air. For the “12-months- a- year” dedicated regulars..they celebrate mid February-March when the “newbies” have fallen off the wagon, and the “veterans” no longer have to wait for machines & equipment. I, on the other hand, as a trainer & coach, am saddened by people who can’t/won’t make the lifelong commitment to an exercise program.
Many times, people begin an exercise program in an effort to lose weight. Lately, however, I have seen a lot more people implement an exercise program for health reasons. YAY YOU!!...This is where the true value of exercise and the real importance of commitment shines!
So, you are past the days of playing competitive football. You no longer desire to fit in your high school cheerleading outfit. Maybe you even are happy with the way your body looks right now…So, is it still important to exercise?..And, I do mean purposefully exercise by committing to a weight training & cardiovascular exercise program??…ABSOLUTELY!!
Recently “The Wall Street Journal” published an article entitled “The Hidden Benefits of Exercise”. What a wonderful article. I have, for a very long time, viewed exercise as a “cure-all” (for me personally anyway!). I have experienced many of the psychological benefits that go along with exercise, and I’m hoping as I age into an “older adult”, I will benefit more and more from my daily exercise regime. Being able to have my beliefs confirmed in this article was great!
Exercise has been touted as boosting your immune system, stress relieving & great for boosting your metabolism…did you know that exercise has even been shown to reduce the risk of some sorts of cancers…including colon cancer by over 60%. In addition to this article, which you can find at the Wall Street Journal on line, exercise has also been shown to be beneficial with the following:
· Stoke- Aerobic (cardiovascular exercise) in particular, has been shown to lower the risk of stroke
· Heart Disease (no surprise here!) Some studies suggest cardiovascular exercise can lower the risk of heart disease by 20-35%!!
· Good for those bones!! Weight bearing exercises 3-5 days a week have been shown to increase the density in bones…especially important for us ladies!
· Diabetes. Research has shown that people who are “moderately” active have 30-40% lower risk of Type 2 diabetes.
· Depression- Again…no surprise..We all know how great we feel after a workout. Active people have been shown to be 15-25% less likely to suffer from depression.
· Blood Pressure. High blood pressure is in epidemic proportions….Research has shown that by implementing cardiovascular exercise for 40 minutes, 3-5 days a week will lower your blood pressure substantially.
· Arthritis. It seems like a catch 22…you don’t feel like exercising because of the pain…yet exercising will reduce the pain, inflammation & disability.
· Prevents falls. We all know of someone who, as they aged, has become more weak & frail. Due to inactivity, their bones, muscles & connecting tissues become weak, which also affects their abilities to balance. In several studies, research has shown that 30minutes of moderate exercise, 3 times a week can lower the risk of falls by adding strength & coordination.
So…that being said. Whether you have made a commitment this year (and for the rest of your life!!), to commit to exercise…and your sticking with it. Or, you have made the committment this year…and already went astray….Or, you are perfectly content with the “look” of your body…NOW is the time to commit to an exercise program for life. Through commitment to a solid exercise program & and a smart eating program of “clean foods”…you will increase the potential to live a much more rewarding and fulfilling life..day in, day out, for the rest of your life. So, if you haven’t committed to it yet…TODAY IS THE DAY!! Commit to a daily exercise program…Improve your life!!! You deserve it!!
Believe…and you WILL achieve!
